Mount Teide National Park: A Journey Through Fire, Wine, and the Stars

Discovering Tenerife’s Most Iconic Volcano: Mount Teide

Tenerife is an island shaped by fire and time where volcanic landscapes tell stories of ancient eruptions. And at the heart of it all stands Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain and the third-largest volcano in the world when measured from its base on the ocean floor.

But Teide is a place where you taste the land in a glass of volcanic wine, where you hike through a Martian-like landscape, and where, at night, you feel the weight of the universe under a sky bursting with stars.

On our Tenerife 4 Elements Adventure, we immersed ourselves in this land of extremes, from the warmth of the vineyards to the cold silence of the summit. Here’s how Teide transformed us, and why it should be on your bucket list.

Tasting the Volcano: High-Altitude Wine with Pedro at Bodega 1242

The journey began at the foothills of Teide, where we met Pedro, a winemaker and storyteller. His vineyard, Bodega 1242, sits among the highest-altitude vines in Europe 1242m, where volcanic soil creates wines that are as unique as the land itself.

“This soil is alive,” Pedro told us, holding a handful of the dark, mineral-rich earth. “It has seen eruptions, felt the power of Teide, absorbed the Atlantic winds. That’s why our wines taste like nowhere else.”

We gathered around a rustic wooden table, glasses in hand, and tasted the volcano – deep reds and crisp whites with smoky, earthy notes that spoke of the land’s raw energy.

Hiking on Mars: Walking Through Teide’s Otherworldly Landscapes

With the taste of the volcano still on our lips, we continued our journey upward. The landscape changed dramatically – black lava fields, towering rock formations, craters that looked like frozen waves of fire.

📍 Must-See Stops in Teide National Park:

  • Roques de García – Iconic rock pillars shaped by centuries of wind and eruptions
  • Llano de Ucanca – A vast volcanic plain that looks like a desert on another planet
  • Las Minas de San José – Golden sand fields where NASA tested its Mars rovers.

Each step felt surreal. The silence was deafening yet peaceful, broken only by the crunch of volcanic rock beneath our boots.

As we reached a panoramic viewpoint, the entire island unfolded beneath us—the Atlantic stretching endlessly, the sky shifting into golden hues. It was a moment that reminded us of how small we are, yet how deeply connected to this earth.

Sunset Time: Watching the Shadow of Teide Stretch Over the Ocean

As the sun began to set, something magical happened.

Teide’s shadow stretched across the Atlantic, forming one of the world’s most unique natural phenomena. The sky ignited in burnt orange, deep crimson, soft violet, each color blending into the next like a painting.

“I’ve seen many sunsets,” someone whispered, “but never one like this.”

It was the kind of moment that made us forget everything else – no emails, no notifications, no distractions. Just the present, the mountain, and the sky burning with color.

The Universe Above: Stargazing on Teide with Alessandro

As darkness took over, we met Alessandro, a local astronomer and engineer who had built the largest telescope in Tenerife with his own hands.

Under one of the best stargazing skies in the world, far from city lights, we saw planets, constellations, distant galaxies.

“For centuries, these stars guided travelers, explorers, and dreamers,” Alessandro told us. “They remind us where we come from – and how vast the universe really is.”

Looking through the telescope, we saw Saturn’s rings, the glow of distant nebulas, and even light that had traveled for millions of years to reach us.

At that point we all felt it—that humbling realization that we are small, yet part of something immense.

Reaching the Summit of Mount Teide

For those who want to stand at the top of Spain, the summit of Teide (3,715m) is an unforgettable challenge.

Here’s how to reach the top:

  • Take the cable car to 3,555m and hike the last stretch (permit required).
  • Hike the full route for the ultimate adventure (high altitude, physically demanding).

Travel Sustainably: Protecting Teide for Future Generations

Experiences like this remind us why we must protect places like Teide.

At NuAdventure, we believe in:

  • Respecting the trails – Volcanic terrain is fragile. Stay on marked paths.
  • Leaving no trace – Carry out what you bring in.
  • Supporting local communities – Like Pedro’s vineyard, to keep traditions alive.
